Worldview Rant

What is the basis of a worldview?  There are many answers, but I want to hone in on one answer.

I believe the “basis” of one’s worldview is the thing that doesn’t change or shift in their lives.  It is the thing or the “lens” by which one sees the world around him, the way in which he interprets the “why” questions in life.

Now I want to turn to those that claim Christianity as their “worldview”.  If we were to take a person with no bias – that is – a person that’s not a Christian, Muslem, or any other religion – one with no baggage, no experience, effectively no worldview;  and place them in front of a TV set for one day, let’s imagine what he sees.

I think that he would see many in America claiming Christianity as their worldview.  He would see that many politicians are actually even devout according to what they’re saying, and what their admirers say.  He’d even see that this person named “Jesus” was actually a good person, even a good teacher.  He’d say that there are a whole lot of followers (or disciples) of Jesus in the world even now, according to many news reports.

He’d see something else.  He’d see the obvious problem that arises because of our earlier definition of “worldview”.  He’d see that some “Christians” would say that unborn babies are lives that need protection.  He’d see other “Christians” who say that the liberty of a woman is more important than this little life, and trumps the rights of the unborn.  He’d see folks claiming Jesus as their Lord defending the definition of marriage being between a man and a woman, as well as others who equally and emphatically claim Jesus as Lord defending the rights of two men to marry. (Or two women, or a man and a boy, or a man and an animal, or a woman and herself, etc, etc, etc).

I would say this hypothetical observer would be very confused.  And I’d say that he’d be right in being confused.  Can Christianity be a worldview if it’s not based on the sacred text known as the Bible?  Can two people who claim the same worldview be as diametrically different as this?

Here’s the truth of the matter (and I might offend some reader out there):  If you claim Jesus as your Lord – yet YOU DO NOT obey, nor have a desire to honor Him – you are NOT a Christian, it’s as simple as that. This is not my opinion – it is scripture:

John 3:36 Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.

This is not a verse taken out of context, nor is it something that is left up to “interpretation”.  It’s quite simple really:  If Jesus is your Lord – then you are His slave.  You are bought with a price.  You will strive to honor Him and do what He desires.  If you don’t like this, nor don’t understand it, then you’ve never entered into life, and your sin abides on you.  You need to repent and believe the Gospel.  You may say that you’re Catholic or Baptist or Methodist or whatever; but you’ve never been brought from death to life.  You need to repent and believe.

Ask yourself the question regarding your worldview:  Are you REALLY a Christian?  Can you REALLY say that you have a Christian worldview?  If you do, you HAVE to acknowledge that you cannot be your own standard – that the Bible IS the standard that never changes.  Now – there are many who read that last statement and say, “No, I don’t have to acknowledge that.”  Understand this – that “Christian” literally means “Christ – like”, or “Little Christ”.  It was a derogatory term for Jesus’ followers in the first century because they looked like Jesus.  Does your worldview look like His?  Can you be accused of being a Christian by your worldview?

I see all over the news about how Obama is a Christian, so we “Christians” can vote for him.  Let me ask this question:  Is what Obama believes about abortion and gay marriage consistent with Jesus?  If not, then his worldview is not Christian.

You may say, “Well, McCain isn’t a Christian either, then!”  To you I say, “I don’t know if he is or not.”  I really don’t like McCain a whole lot, myself.  I think some of his views are idiotic.  I am not at all a defender of McCain.  I AM, however, a defender of human rights – that is – the unborn – the ones who can’t speak for themselves. I WILL vote for McCain, because the alternative is far worse.

If you are a Christian, in this election season, please vote with the candidate’s worldview in mind.  Which candidate’s worldview is MOST consistent with that of the Bible?  Let that be your guide, not economic or foreign policy, nor any innate charisma.

If you say you are a Christian, but know that you don’t follow Christ, nor desire to honor Him, then you’re actually NOT a Christian, so you have really only two choices to get off of the fence:

1.  Repent and believe the Gospel.

2.  Stop claiming my Lord as having changed you.  You’re making a mockery of the cross. The kingdom of God is hurt by folks claiming Christ, yet living however they want to.  I urge you to stop claiming Christ if you are not His.  Please just say to folks that you are a pagan or heathen, or Muslem, or an unbeliever, or Wiccan, or whatever; just stop claiming Jesus as your Lord.

AMEN and AMEN! I think only because God has shown me how my own fence riding in the past was a disgrace to his HOLINESS can I wholeheartedly agree with your statement. The problem arises in that we have churches who allow or better yet.. Promote fence riding.

To quote a famous person who I do not in any way support, Gandhi.. “I like your Christ, it’s your Christians I do not like.” I think that sums it up best. We have too many people claiming the Cross and yet not willing to carry it. Great post. Thanks.
